AdBlue in the Diesel Tank
AdBlue is a urea solution used by modern diesel engines to reduce emissions. It has its own separate, usually blue, filler cap. If it's accidentally poured into the diesel tank instead, it doesn't mix with diesel and will start to crystallise, which can quickly damage the fuel system if the engine is started.
Signs to look out for
- Engine won't start, or stalls almost immediately
- Visible crystallisation around the fuel filler
- A strong ammonia-like smell
What we do
- Drain the tank before any crystallisation can spread
- Flush the fuel lines and filter
- Refill with the correct diesel
- Run a start check before we leave
Important: if you haven't started the engine, leave it off and call us. The risk of damage is low. If you have started it or driven the car, turn the engine off as soon as it's safe and get in touch; a more thorough flush will be needed.
