Diesel in a Petrol Car
Less common than the reverse, but just as serious. Diesel doesn't ignite the same way petrol does, so a petrol engine running on diesel will quickly struggle, and diesel residue can foul spark plugs and the catalytic converter if the car is driven for any distance.
Signs to look out for
- Engine struggles to start or won't start
- Heavy, unusual exhaust smoke
- Spluttering or misfiring if the engine did start
- A strong diesel smell from the exhaust
What we do
- Drain the tank and fuel lines
- Check the fuel filter and spark plugs for fouling
- Refill with the correct petrol
- Run a start check before we leave
Important: if you haven't started the engine, leave it off and call us. The risk of damage is low. If you have started it or driven the car, turn the engine off as soon as it's safe and get in touch; a more thorough flush will be needed.
